Games
Following on with Stephen Lundin’s idea of ‘Work Made Fun Gets Done’ http://charthouse.org I have incorporated the use of many games. Postage stamps provide the opportunity for students to create a wide range of games.
IÂ know that children are incredibly capable and curious and willing helpers.
Creating games gives students the opportunity to make choices( what paper to use etc), problem solve (not enough stamps etc), work together (explore different roles) etc, etc.
It involves math skills(measurement, shape), physical skills(fine motor skills, eye hand coordination), technology skills(creating a template for games),english skills(writing a procedural text, speaking, listening)
The games can be made for their own class use, to give to another class or even to use as a fundraiser for a specific target project.( Sponsor a child etc)
Lotto (set of four game boards are created with matching individual cards)
Snap (set of matching stamp cards are created)
Memory ( set of matching stamp cards are created)
Bingo ( The number of cards made depends on the purpose. If creating for a small group game create four to six cards of random stamps and create a matching set of individual cards for the caller to use. Students will need some form of disk or small block to put on a called stamp.)
Dominoes
Recently I purchased a laminator and some laminating pages. So far I have created several activities that can be used for a range of activities. The good new is that lamintaing the stamps onto paper really brings out the colour of the stamps. I now have some inexpensive resources that are colourful and interesting.
*Number cards 1-10
*Shape cards (square, triangle, circle and rectangle)
*Alphabet cards(a few missing letters at this stage)
*Price value matching game
*Date of stamp sequencing game.(used Christmas stamps for this one)
